is anyone planning a garden this year?

i have swung with the pendulum on this endeavour over the years.... my best year ever i had 32 different food "crops" but as more kids arrived and the deer population encoached on "my" encroachment, i let it disappear from the " to do " list".

this year, i am determined to get back at it full force...... with modifications to accomodate my "older" knees and the still encroaching deer, using the "square foot gardening" approach as well as container gardening on the deck..... anyone here have experience with either?.

having just finished a nutrition course and dealing with the rising costs of fresh food ( that is not over salted or corn syrup sweetened), i really feel an urgency to try to supplement what is available .

Got my first early potatoes in a few weeks ago, now I'm just sprouting my maincrop.

I've also got onions, cabbage, brussels sprouts, carrots and calabrese (a bit like broccoli!) to put in but its been too cold. I have four plots about 6ft square and I rotate - so one plot is always empty each year.

Eventually I'd like to try growing some fruit trees - apples, pears and plums (just about the only fruit I eat lol)

You could try building raised beds if you can afford - if you want instant ones you'll need to buy a lot of topsoil - aim to raise them about 2ft above ground level.

WARNING deeply philosophical...Have you ever wondered...

our home galaxy contains up to 1 billion stars...our universe contains over 50 billion galaxies with billions of stars...why here would god take his stand...send his god son to deliver us...a big galaxy with a nondiscript star with a few planets and we are the center of gods attention...makes you wonder....sometimes...

Correct theological understanding teaches that God sent his son to redeem the whole of creation, not just mankind - so that includes all the planets and their inhabitants, all the galaxies, all the stars, all the black holes plus whatever else yo want to add - hence all the references in the Bible to 'creation groaning' - and more impotantly the new heavens and new earth - when the redemption is completed, they will be renewed and cleansed (not destroyed and recreated - strangely one teaching where JW's are closer to the mark than some mainstream Christian churches!)

As to why God chose to send his son here and not elsewhere, I have no idea - maybe its because we're the lowest level of intelligence and thus the only ones dumb enough not to recognise him and then kill him cos we didn't like his message! Thus, in a wacky sort of way we were best suited for God's purpose!

Gawd they've been around for years - used to play them for our young charges in the Sunday school classes when we had nothing else planned.

They are some of the cheesiest of crapdom!!

okay - for the last hour 2 friends and i have been sitting and talking business.

it started out as a joke on how we could digitise magazine and download them into a very real business idea re: the soccer world cup happening here in 2010.. it is a brilliant idea, which i will share in completion once we have registered / patented it so that it can't be stolen.

plus plus we can use it to uplift previously disadvantaged people, the only thing is they may not be able to cope with the demand - how awesome is that - i'm going to be helping people make a living - wow - skipping with happiness.. i haven't been this excited for a looooooooooooooooong time - i really do feel like my brain could pop with all the ideas - the thing is ... it's so so doable.

dear friends,.

much of what we do on a daily basis is routine and of no particular, earth-shaking importance.

however, after reviewing letters of family going back to wwii, it is fascinating to read what dad was doing on board the aircraft carrier in the pacific on any old day, what mom was cooking on her ever-steaming range, how i was dealing with the roller coaster of emotion at bethel [mom saved all my letters], how nana wrote that she would not study with the witnesses [per my request] but 'here are some mittens i knitted for you when you canvass new york with your magazines.

Well it's 10.30am and I've seen excitement already today! There was lots of shouting then a loud bang. We have some new noisy neighbours so I thought it was just them again. Pulled back my curtains to see two police cars parked at the end of my driveway!! I think one of said neighbours has been arrested, the loud bang probably the door being broken down by the police, I haven't been out for a look yet though!!!

I'm going to do some voluntary work in a charity cafe over lunch time, don't know whether I'm looking forward to it or not but it will be a change. Then I'm going to do some seed planting - cabbage, brussels sprouts etc, hopefully all the frost and snow will be gone by the time they're big enough to plant out!

Better get ready to go now, have a good day all.

i read of someone on this site that gave a public talk and disassociated himself at the end of the talk.

has anyone here da'd by giving a comment at a meeting?????.

it would be kinda cool with the big generation light coming up to just raise my hand, say i don't believe it, and be done with it.

(((BB))) and (((momz))) our pets are so special - sometimes they're the only ones who preserve our sanity. BB I hope you will cherish and enjoy the remaining time with your dog and momz, I hope your kitty gets back to 'normal'.

My nieces' kitten which they got to replace the one they lost in January has been very ill, his kidneys may be packing up too, they're still trying to work out what's wrong with him. He does seem to have rallied a bit over the weekend but he's going to take a long time to recover if they can treat him - he hasn't grown and his back legs are all but wasted - he walks knock-kneed like an elderly cat would - but he's only 4 months old

I've done a lot of studying today - its hard work as for Greek exegesis, I have no notes to mark and scribble on - I have to do it myself! Typing into Word and having to find the Greek lettering on the symbol tables really slows me down. I'd use the special codes but I'd have to learn a whole nuther alphabet for that lol!

my paycheck arrived today for the 5 days I spent last month braving the elements and being abused by irate motorists woohoomustn't spend it all at once though!

I'm needing a lot less sleep for now - didn't go to bed till 3am this morning (no, I finished my Pogo challenge at around 1.30am! I went surfing for seasonal work opportunities) and I was still wide awake at 8.30am!!

God --- Artist or Engineer?

i've been wondering whether god should be seen as an artist or an engineer.

the hebrew verb commonly translated as 'created' in genesis 1:1 bears the meaning of 'to cut out', hinting at god being a sculptor.

in its endeavour to imitate scientific language, the intelligent design movement, on the other hand, wants us to believe that god is an engineer who consciously designed the entire universe.

And yet even artists have to work within the bounds of engineering science.

For example, a painter has to know how to blend their colours to get the desired effect, they are limited by the laws of colour physics.

The sculptor has to know the scientific dynamic/properties of the material they are sculpting so that they can obtain the right tools for the job and not put unnecessary strain upon the finished model - so even God as a sculptor operates within those bounds - except that they are the bounds that he put in place!
